Premenstrual Exacerbation (PME) refers to the premenstrual exacerbation/worsening of the symptoms of another disorder, such as major depressive disorder or generalized anxiety disorder.
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a cyclical mood disorder with symptoms that start during the premenstrual or luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and subsides within a few days of menstruation.
The vast majority of women/AFAB with PMDD have normal hormone levels. PMDD appears to be a negative response or sensitivity to the rise and fall in female reproductive hormones during the different phases of the cycle.
